Philosophy and Approach

I believe that individuals inherently desire to create and maintain healthy relationships with others; however, many individuals need guidance and perception in order for them to accomplish healthy boundaries, emotional regulation and understanding of themselves and others.  I also believe that ultimately, people desire to create changes in their lives that brings them a positive life experience (for example goal setting, academic or work performance, friendships, relationships with family members, etc) rather than a negative life experience. Again, often times, individuals require guidance on creating those changes. That is why I became a counselor. My goal is to assist others in creating healthy relationships with themselves and others as well as creating positive change in their lives.

My approach to counseling utilizes the Family Systems Model and implementing  Cognitive-Behavioral techniques.  From my perspective, you need to understand where an individual has come from, what their supports are or are not and how they relate to others in their family.  In addition, it is my experience that often times individuals have thinking errors related to many different experiences or interactions that can create stress or anxiety for them.  In incorporating the cognitive-behavioral techniques, it helps individuals understand their thought processes and how they may lead to positive or negative behaviors or outcomes.  From that understanding comes identifying ways the individual can change their thinking process and subsequently their behaviors to work toward positive outcomes.

Formal Education and Training

I hold a Masters Degree in Counseling and Human Services from the University of Idaho.  My course work included training in individual and group work.  Within my Masters level experience, I have worked as a School Counselor, Mental Health Counselor and as an adoption caseworker.  As a counselor I have worked with children, families and adults in areas such as anxiety, depression, life changes, conflict resolution, adoption preparation and adoption issues, childhood behavior concerns and many others.  I have a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Idaho in Child Development and Family relations, with an emphasis in Special Education.  During my undergraduate work, I served at-risk children and their families as well as children, teens and adults with disabilities.

As a Licensee of the Oregon Board of Licensed Professional Counselors and Therapists, I will abide by its Code of Ethics.  To maintain my license I am required to participate in annual continuing education, taking classes dealing with subjects relevant to my profession.

Fees for counseling services are $105.00 per 50 minute session.  Some adjustment in fees is possible in cases of need and when discussed in advance with the counselor.
