Philosophy and Approach

As humans, one of our most basic needs for emotional, psychological and spiritual well being is to be understood, respected and loved just as we are. We long for nurture, acceptance and validation. In other words we long for unconditional love. However, this being an imperfect world, unconditional love may not come easily and people try many unsatisfying ways to get this need met. Relationships become strained when we expect people to satisfy all of those needs in us.. Bitterness, defensiveness, criticism and judgment can develop against each other and we feel hurt and isolated. We may even become our own worst critic. Discovering your own needs and disappointments, strengths and weaknesses, help pave the way for finding and building the resources available to experience love, acceptance and self respect.

Education

I received my Bachelor of Social Work at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks in 1997, and a Master’s of Social Work from Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, New York in 2001. I practiced in an agency similar to Salem Pastoral Counseling in Fairbanks Alaska for seven years. There I worked with a wide variety of individuals, couples and children. I opened my own private practice in Fairbanks, for three years, until moving to the Salem area. I have also received specialized training in EMDR therapy which is described below.

My Therapeutic Approach

…starts with providing a safe atmosphere of empathy, validation and respect. I consider it an honor to be trusted with someone’s personal story and I endeavor to hold it softly and respectfully. Some of my theoretical approaches I include in assisting clients include;

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Basically, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy helps people identify the negative and positive beliefs about themselves they have learned through life experiences. Learning to reevaluate your negative thoughts and beliefs is a practice that can help you reduce depression and anxiety.

Some experiences however have a way of embedding those negative beliefs literally into our body and soul and mind in deeper layers, and they do not simply “erase” by “thinking differently”. Big and small trauma can have these kind of effects on people.

(EMDR) Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing is a therapeutic method especially effective for resolving the impact of traumatic events that taught us negative beliefs about ourselves or the world around us. If you find that you seem to react strongly to current experiences with much more intensity than the situation should generate. If people tell you, you are “over reacting”, it could be that this present experience is “reminding you” and “tapping into” an old reservoir of disturbing memories.

EMDR is a fascinating therapeutic model based on the premise that our body and mind will always move toward healing. EMDR focuses on specific events the client chooses to process. Your brain will reprocess that experience toward a more adaptive framework, with the wisdom and resources that you have at your disposal now, which you didn’t have then. Clients usually report feeling much less or no disturbance and are able to embrace a more adaptive positive outlook after completing their EMDR sessions. I am continually amazed at the resolution clients are able to find within themselves, their own value systems, and their resources, that no amount of usual talk therapy would provide. I consider EMDR to be the most effective tool in my box, and is effective with children as well as adults.

Fees for counseling services are $155.00 for the initial session and $105.00 for each subsequent individual session.  Some adjustment in fees is possible in cases of need and when discussed in advance with the counselor.
